Intermittent closures on both spans of the Interstate 5 Bridge are scheduled for two Friday nights this month to lubricate cables used to raise and lower the bridge-lift spans.
The first closures will be from 10 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday, with a second round from 10 p.m. July 26 to 8 a.m. July 27.
The closures will last no more than 25 minutes. The two spans will not be lifted at the same time.
For those not wanting to wait during the closures, the detour for southbound traffic will be state Highway 14 east to Interstate 205 and south across the I-205 Bridge into Oregon. The northbound detour will be Interstate 84 east to I-205 north into Washington.
Every year, Oregon Department of Transportation crews lubricate by hand more than 6 miles of cable to keep the lift apparatus operating properly.
The I-5 Bridge is jointly owned by Oregon and Washington, with Oregon responsible for operating and maintaining the bridge.
The northbound span opened in 1917, followed by the southbound span in 1958.
