Deputies respond to shooting at Sarah J. Anderson Elementary School

Law enforcement responded to a shooting with multiple victims in the parking lot of of Sarah J. Anderson Elementary School in Hazel Dell about 3:20 p.m. Tuesday. The victims were taken to area hospitals with unknown injuries.

Initial information from the shooting scene was unclear. Fire District 6 spokesman Dave Schmitke said rescuers were at first waved off from the scene, which suggested fatalities, but rescuers were able to detect a pulse on both victims and transported them, with one sent to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center and the other to Legacy Emmanuel in Portland.

There is no active threat to the public at this time related to this incident and no active shooter at the elementary school, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. The school had already been let out and most students had left for the day.

No staff or students were injured in the shooting, according to a press release from Vancouver Public Schools.

Deputies responded to the school at 2215 N.E. 104th St. in Hazel Dell where they found two victims. The male suspect fled the parking lot in a red car as officers were headed toward the school, according to the scanner. Deputies had a description of the suspect and suspect vehicle. The suspect was located and a pursuit ensued. The suspect eventually stopped at Padden Parkway and Andresen Road and appears to have shot himself.

The school was put into lockdown but it was lifted shortly before 4 p.m. Gaiser Middle School was also temporarily locked down. Streets around the school are also closed. 

Clark County Major crimes is investigating.

Police activity is causing traffic backups and delays on southbound Interstate 205 at Milepost 33 near Exit 32 to Padden Parkway. The southbound offramp to Padden Parkway is blocked. Drivers are advised to avoid the area. 

Sarah J. Anderson elementary is in Vancouver Public Schools. The school was built in 1955 and has about 800 students.
