Perkins still leads Rivard in close Evergreen schools race

With available ballots dwindling, it appears high school teacher Bethany Rivard is unlikely to surpass incumbent Rob Perkins in the race for Evergreen Public Schools Board of Directors.

Rivard is 159 votes behind Perkins in Friday’s returns for the District No. 2 race. Perkins, a software developer, is winning with 50.4 percent of the ballot to Rivard’s 49.7.

In the contested race for Camas-Washougal Port District Commissioner, challenger Cassi Marshall overcame Bill Ward. She has 50.6 percent of the votes to Ward’s 49.5 percent. The two were tied in Thursday returns.

There are still 1,200 ballots left to count.

Both races represented unusual last-minute volleying for an off-year election. Auditor Greg Kimsey said a surge of late ballots had this year’s election looking more like a presidential year. Turnout as of Friday was 35.4 percent. Four years ago, in 2015, voter turnout was 34 percent.
