New COVID-19 data puts Clark County in ‘high risk’ group for school reopening

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Clark County rose by 11 Tuesday, as new data on the rate of new infections placed the county in the “high risk” category for school reopenings.

Clark County Public Health reported the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 2,121 as of Tuesday. The number of deaths held steady at 42. The last death was reported Aug. 7.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 fell to 12 cases Tuesday but the number of those hospitalized awaiting test results rose to 13, according to Public Health.

The infection rate, which is updated weekly, calculates the number of new cases over a two-week period per 100,000 population. State officials have recommended that schools be closed to in-person instruction in “high risk” areas with infection rates higher than 75. The county’s infection rate as of Tuesday was 88.0.

Eight Clark County school districts have previously recommended a fully remote start to the school year. They are required to submit their plans for instruction to the state this week.

Clark County’s infection rates had been at 74.3 in data released last week, which was classified as “moderate risk” for school reopening, but infection rates had previously been much higher, varying between between 96.4 and 99.7 new cases per 100,000 residents in two separate periods in July.
