Employee gets 29 days on work crew for recording woman who was tanning nude at Vancouver Crunch Fitness

A former Vancouver Crunch Fitness employee who recorded a gym member with his cellphone while she was tanning in the nude was sentenced Tuesday to 29 days on a work crew.

Zackary Abel, 30, pleaded guilty in Clark County Superior Court to second-degree voyeurism, a gross misdemeanor, stemming from the incident at the gym, 7809 N.E. Vancouver Plaza Drive.

Vancouver police responded about 5 p.m. June 8, 2019, to Crunch Fitness to a report that an employee was taking photos of a woman as she dressed after tanning, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

The victim said she saw an iPhone recording her as she was inside the tanning cubicle. She confronted the suspect, identified as Abel, afterward, the affidavit says.

Police later contacted Abel at his residence, and he admitted to recording the woman. He said he “knew it was illegal … but did it anyway,” the affidavit reads.

Abel’s plea deal shows he was given a total of 364 days with 334 days suspended for two years, allowing him to serve the rest of his sentence through partial confinement. He was given credit for one day served, according to court records. He must also undergo a psychosexual evaluation and any required treatment.
