Trap Door Brewery seeks assist to help homeless families

When you place your online to-go order for cans of Trap Door Brewery‘s beer, you can add a $20 donation to fill a backpack for students experiencing homelessness.

Trap Door usually hosts a fundraiser each May for Homeless Outreach Promoting Education, also known as HOPE, a partnership between Vancouver Public Schools and local shelters to help meet the needs of homeless families with school-aged children.

“In a typical year, we would start the fundraiser May 1 and culminate with a big party at Trap Door with live music, raffles and fun at the end of May. This year, nope, no party,” said Bryan Shull, the brewery’s owner.

Shull collaborated with Selby Bridge Co. to buy 80 backpacks from Jansport through his nonprofit organization Cruise the Couve. Now he’s seeking donations to fill the backpacks with school supplies and hygiene products, as well as pay for utility assistance, bus passes and other needs identified by HOPE.

Shull said he hopes to collect $5,000 for HOPE by May 31.

To donate, go to the online store at trapdoorbrewing.com and choose “HOPE Backpack Sponsor.”
