Teen killed in head-on collision in Glenwood identified

The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the 17-year-old boy who was killed Friday in a head-on collision in the Glenwood area.

Aaron A. Makunin of Vancouver died from multiple blunt force injuries, according to the medical examiner, who listed his manner of death as accidental.

First responders were dispatched shortly before 5 p.m. to a report of a crash in the 15000 block of Northeast 72nd Avenue, according to a news release from the Vancouver Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived to find two vehicles, a Mercedes sedan and Ford van, that had collided head-on. Makunin was unresponsive and pinned inside the Mercedes he was driving. Firefighters extricated him with heavy tools, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, the news release states.

Witnesses said the Mercedes was traveling south on Northeast 72nd Avenue when it crossed the centerline and collided with the Ford, according to the news release.

The driver of the van, Cody Potter, 27, of Battle Ground, was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.

A GoFundMe created to cover Makunin’s funeral costs had raised more than $21,000 as of Monday afternoon. The account says he was a twin in a family of four children and was on his way home from fishing when he crashed.

Potter, a self-employed contractor, also has a recovery fund through GoFundMe. The account says he was driving home from work when the crash occurred. He suffered a serious injury to his left ankle, which will require multiple surgeries, and he will be out of work for months.
