Lectures in Vancouver to commemorate 75th anniversary of the end of WWII

Two public lectures at Fort Vancouver Regional Library locations this week will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Mac MacDonald, a speaker with expertise in WWII-era history and Normandy, will address the question “What does World War II mean to us today?” during presentations at Three Creeks Community Library and Cascade Park Community Library.

“Since that war is becoming as distant as is WWI, I help bring back what the sacrifices should mean,” MacDonald said in an email. “Teachers springboard off of this presentation, students need it, veterans are buoyed by it.”

In 2014, MacDonald was also selected as one of the speakers for the 70-year commemoration event of the D-Day landings in Normandy.

During a history lesson accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation, MacDonald will host a discussion on the details of June 6, 1944, when United States troops partook in a “meticulously planned and perilously risky invasion” on the northern coast of France, MacDonald wrote.

Thematically, the presentation will also connect the sacrifices of war to the need for people today to invest in their own communities, MacDonald added.

“Commitment to one’s own continued professional development, self-motivation and zeal within your organization, and also one’s commitment to the betterment of society, i.e. volunteering, participating, engaging — basically remembering our obligation to pay rent for our space on Earth,” MacDonald said.

The first presentation will be held Monday at Three Creeks Community Library, 800 N.E. Tenney Road, Vancouver. The second will be hosted Tuesday at Cascade Park Community Library, 600 N.E. 136th Ave., Vancouver. Both events will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
