The Value Motel in Hazel Dell has been boarded up and a sign on the front lobby reads that it is under construction.
That’s about all the information available, since the phone lines have been disconnected and no one is occupying the building, at 708 N.E. 78th St. However, a screen of rolling security cameras was still visible through the lobby window on Tuesday and appears to be recording.
A resident at a neighboring apartment said he was told the motel is being renovated. As of Tuesday, no construction equipment was on the lot, and a property information search on Clark County’s website showed no permit activity for the property since an adjoining restaurant was demolished on the site in 2017.
The owner of the property, Commercial Adventures LLC., under the ownership of MOB investments owned by Miton O. Brown, did not immediately return a call from The Columbian seeking information about the closure and any planned construction.
The owner of the Value Motel, according to the Washington State Department of Revenue, is NCM Management LLC., and Haresh Patel is the governing employee. But the company lists the same phone number as Value Motel, and it is disconnected.
Value Motel has been the subject of the Washington State Department of Health investigations into its condition. In 2011, investigators found feces, urine and other organic material on the mattresses and bedsheets. They found rodent droppings, sections of railing missing and hypodermic needles.
The state threatened to shut down the motel, but after a follow-up check later that year, officials reported deficiencies identified in earlier inspections had been resolved and decided to drop any action against the motel.
The motel has operated in Hazel Dell since 1963.
