Walk & Knock collects 276,220 pounds of food during drive

This month’s Walk & Knock Food Drive collected more than 276,220 pounds of food for the Clark County Food Bank.

“Despite soggy, wet weather and Christmas being just over two weeks away, Clark County once against showed its incredible generosity,” Walk & Knock President Tom Knappenberger said in a news release. “After 35 years we remain the best one-day community food drive in the nation. That’s quite a statement of who we are.”

More than 2,900 volunteers collected bags and boxes of donations on Dec. 7.

Walk & Knock also received cash donations and nonperishable food was collected from donation barrels.

Donations were down about 3 percent from last year, which Knappenberger attributed to weather, declining numbers of volunteers and the need to get the word out in different ways.

The nonperishables collected during the food drive will provide 230,183 meals valued at $477,861.

“Year after year, this community steps up to care for its most vulnerable to make sure they get the food they need,” Clark County Food Bank President Alan Hamilton said in the news release. “I am so appreciative of what the Walk & Knock organization does to help and to serve for the good of us all.”
