PeaceHealth, Hewlett-Packard offices briefly evacuated

Inaccurate information about a hostage situation at PeaceHealth’s and Hewlett-Packard’s offices in east Vancouver led to an evacuation Thursday afternoon.

The Vancouver Police Department responded early in the afternoon to 1115 N.E. 164th Ave. The building was evacuated for roughly 30 minutes before it was determined that employees could safely return, PeaceHealth spokesman Randy Querin said.

An employee in the building found out last week that one of her co-workers carries a gun to work, Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Kim Kapp said. The employee has a concealed pistol license and is legally allowed to possess a firearm.

After hearing about the gun, the employee reported it to supervisors this week, Kapp said. As the information was forwarded to other supervisors, some mistakenly came to believe that someone was holding people hostage in a conference room.

No crime was committed, Kapp said, and no one was injured.

PeaceHealth owns the building and shares office space with Hewlett-Packard.
