Battle Ground 9-year-old honored for quick-acting efforts to save grandmother

Battle Ground — Ethan Clarke, 9, just finished basketball practice back in February and was walking to his grandmother’s car.

He got in the car and his grandmother got out to secure the rear hatch. She thought she put the car in park, but put it in reverse.

The car moved backward and the driver’s door closed, catching her foot in the process.

She was on the ground being dragged by the car. Ethan unbuckled his seat, jumped over to the driver’s side and hit the brakes. He put the car in park, and onlookers called emergency responders.

In May, Ethan was honored by Battle Ground Police Chief Bob Richardson, who recognized Ethan’s efforts and heroic actions by presenting him with the Battle Ground Police Department’s Certificate of Recognition and the title of Honorary First Responder.
