Two people were displaced by a fire after apparently disrupting efforts to extinguish it Wednesday night at a mobile home in north Clark County.
Clark County Fire & Rescue was dispatched at 6:04 p.m. to 7909 N.E. 289th St. Arriving crews found smoke coming from the roof of the single-story house, Clark County Fire & Rescue Chief John Nohr said.
The blaze was concentrated around a ventilation system in the back of the residence near a wood stove, which is believed to have overheated, Nohr said. Crews extinguished the blaze in roughly 10 minutes, with smoke and fire damaging part of the house.
The man and woman, who were at the house at the time and uninjured, didn’t listen to firefighters’ instructions to stay away from the scene, Nohr said. While one person attempted to create a hole in the roof to extinguish the fire with a hose, the other person continually removed items from the house.
“We just wanted them to get out of the way so that we could do our job,” Nohr said. “They were concerned about their stuff, their items and if they were going to lose anything.”
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the scene at 6:13 p.m. to remedy the situation. As deputies arrived and the fire was close to being extinguished, the occupants were more cooperative, Nohr said.
The Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating. Fire & Rescue sent three engines, a battalion chief and three water tenders to the scene, while Clark County Fire District 3 sent two engines.
